Patriots release Chris Harper day after muffed punt

Not even 24 hours after his muffed punt, Chris Harper was released by the New England Patriots, according to Patriots Insider Tom E. Curran.

Harper, filling in on special teams for both Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola who are both out with injuries, fielded two punts earlier in the game, but couldn't hang on to the third one. The Broncos recovered and scored a touchdown four plays later.

On Monday, Belichick talked about the play on WEEI's Dale and Holley Show.

“No, it was definitely catchable,” Belichick said. “Look, Chris has done a good job for us. He’s handled the ball in a lot of conditions here at practice that have been as bad, if not worse, last week in the Buffalo game. He had a couple of tough catches where he had to run to get the ball on the sideline. It’s one of those plays where I’m sure he’d like to have back. There were plays I am sure every other player would like to have back somewhere along in the game. There are calls every coach would like to have another shot at, but that’s it.”

Harper is eligible to return to the Patriots practice squad.
