Jerry Thornton of Barstool Sports and Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe are talking backup quarterbacks with Lou Merloni on Sports Tonight after strong peformances by Ryan Mallett and Jimmy Garoppolo in the Patriots' preseason victory over the Eagles.
So, who's No. 2 behind Tom Brady?
"I hate to punt on the questions," said Thornton. "I always felt like what we actually of see in of these guys in camp isn't only the tip of the iceberg it's the snowflake on top of the tip of the iceberg. These guys earn their jobs in practice bubble, on the whiteboard in the meeting room."
Still, Thornton's is backing Jimmy G.
"I know we're all supposed to say, 'Let's pump the brakes on this guy.' The hell with that. I'm all in. He's my spirit animal."
Dupont pointed out that by playing in the second quarter, Garoppolo was facing a little better competition than in his debut against Washington.
"Well, he certainly looks poised," Dupont said. "The question is, they're exhibition games and are these the real players? A little better players tonight. I like his poise. Ultimately, this is going to distill down to are they going to keep three quarterbacks?"
