Talking Points: Abreu reaches base four times

Share

STAR OF THE GAME: Jeff Samardzija

Samardzija was supposed to be a candidate to be dealt at the deadline, but the White Sox recent surge had them re-thinking things. Samardzia allowed just three hits all night and the only one that did any damage was a two-run homer by Pablo Sandoval in the second. He was also remarkably efficient before tiring some in the ninth and needing help from the bullpen.

HONORABLE MENTION: Jose Abreu

Abreu reached base four times in Chicago's Monday night win and he was back to torment the Red Sox again Tuesday, collecting three hits and three RBI. The most notable, of course, was his disputed two-run homer n the sixth that literally carried Mookie Betts with it.

GOAT OF THE GAME: Wade Miley

Miley settled down from the second inning through the fifth, but by then, the damage was done, allowing five runs in the top of the first to put the Red Sox in a familiar, early-inning hole.

TURNING POINT: At 5-2 in the sixth, the Red Sox were still (theoretically) in the game. But instead of it being a terrific inning-ending catch by Mookie Betts, replay challenge ruled that Jose Abreu's fly ball to right center -- which Betts caught, carried into the bullpen on an acrobatic flip, then dropped upon landing -- was a two-run homer.

BY THE NUMBERS: For the first time this season, the Red Sox dropped to 13 games under .500.
