Red Sox win third straight, edge Blue Jays, 4-3

TORONTO -- Suddenly, a Red Sox team that couldn't win on the road or beat teams in their own division, is now doing both.

Backed by six superb innings from rookie lefty Eduardo Rodriguez, the Red Sox edged the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3, giving them three straight wins and four wins in their last five games -- all away from home, against A.L. East opponents.

When the road trip began, the Sox were 11-23 against the East and were seven games under .500 on the road. They've since gone 4-1 in beating Tampa Bay two-of-three and taking the first two games of the four-game set here.

Rodriguez allowed just four hits and had just one tough inning. The outing marked the fifth time in seven career starts that he allowed one run or less.

Toronto starter Marco Estrada issued four walks in the first inning -- including two with the bases loaded -- as the Red Sox, with the help from an error on the part of second baseman Devon Travis, took a 2-0 lead without collecting a hit.

Solo homers from David Ortiz (No. 13) and Jackie Bradley Jr. -- his first in the big leagues in more than a year -- stretched the Red Sox lead to 4-0 in the third.

The Sox didn't score again after that, so they had to hold off the Jays over the final six innings.

Rodriguez was nicked for a run in the fourth when Edwin Encarnacion doubled and scored on a line single to center by Chris Colabello.

Tommy Layne was tagged for a two-run homer by Jose Reyes in the seventh bringing the Jays to within a run.

But Alexi Ogando bridged things from the seventh to the ninth, retiring all four hitters he faced before turning things over to Koji Uehara for his fourth save on the current road trip.
