Red Sox don't feel drastic changes are needed

BOSTON - The saying goes, "Don't mess with success."

If that's true, it makes sense that there have been plenty of calls to shake things up down at Fenway Park.

A pitching coach is gone (and that seems to have helped things some) but is that the extent of change? John Henry said on Tuesday that both John Farrell and Ben Cherington are safe.

He expressed his faith in David Ortiz, the team's 39-year-old DH who has struggled out of the gates this season.

Henry was also quick to go in another direction when Hanley Ramirez's struggles in left field were brought up.

There's no arguing the team's struggles right now, but Henry isn't ready to blow things up.

"The team that we're putting on the field, it's the right team as far as I'm concerned," Henry said. "And we have the right people in place to support that team. So that's what I have to say about that . . . I feel good [about team chemistry]. I also think we have the right mix of veterans and youngsters and speed, defense, I think we have the right mix."

Before Henry's comments on Tuesday, Farrell also said that nothing drastic needs to be done right now in terms of the lineup.

"Not at the moment," Farrell said. "Ben and I and others in the organization, we talk routinely about this team, this roster, how we go about our work, performance, obviously. I am not aware of any major changes right now."

One of the changes Farrell made over the weekend was benching Ortiz for a couple games. Ortiz returned and responded with three hits in the final two games of the series. Nonetheless, the Sox lost both of those games. Still, he doesn't think front office should do anything drastic.

"No. I don't think so," he said. "I think offensive players we just need to start doing things better and start winning ballgames."
