BALTIMORE -- Shortstop Stephen Drew missed his third straight game, both because the Sox were facing a lefty (Wei-Yin Chen) and because they thought it best to give him another day to recover from the right oblique strain he first felt Sunday night in Detroit.
"He's never dealt with an oblique before,'' John Farrell said. "He's had some hamstring issues in the past, but this is something he doesn't have to gauge or compare against and we don't want to risk this turning into something more prolonged.''
Drew took batting practice Wednesday.
"He's going through a full day of activity,'' said Farrell. "There were some light swings (Tuesday), more just to get some rotation involved but not to push it too much.''
Farrell said Drew returning to the lineup Thursday was "a possibility. But we'll get a better read as he comes through it today.''
