Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who won his third Gold Glove last week despite playing with a torn ligament in his thumb since the first day of the season, was named American League defensive player of the year on Thursday.

The award, in its second year, is presented by sporting goods manufacturer Wilson. Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Gerardo Parra was named National League defensive player of the year. Wilson also named the D'Backs the N.L. defensive team of the year, with the Kansas City Royals and Baltimore Orioles sharing the A.L. honor.

The Wilson awards also single out the top defensive player on each team.

Fielding percentage makes up only 10 percent of the Wilson formula for the award. Other sabermetrics and scouting measures, such as zone rating and UZR, make up the rest.
