Steve Buckley and Lou Merloni play a Red Sox-themed game of Buy or Sell, including a debate over whether or not Jon Lester will finish the season with the Red Sox.
"I can guarantee you with 100 percent certainty that Jon Lester will be with the Red Sox for the remainder of the season," says Buckley. "There is an annual expectation that this team will try to win. If they lose every single game between now and the deadline, maybe, but that’s not going to happen.
"They may trade a [Jake] Peavy, they may trade somebody else, [but] they will not trade Lester."
No argument from Lou.
"They should get destroyed if they trade Jon Lester at the deadline," says Merloni.
Was Thursday’s 8-0 loss to the Blue Jays the final nail in the coffin for the 2014 Red Sox?
"No, it’s not," says Buckley. "The American League stinks this year. There are no powerhouse teams… This is still a ‘pick em' race.”
"Do i think the Red Sox are going to the postseason? No. Do I think they have a chance? Yes, because they’re playing a lot of sub-par competition."
Is it time to start worrying about Dustin Pedroia’s offense?
"Dustin Pedroia may never again have the kind of season he had when he won the American League MVP," says Buckley, "[but] he doesn’t have to. If he puts up representative numbers for the life of that contract it will still be a good signing for the Red Sox."
Merloni believes the Red Sox should go after a traditional No. 3 hitter and slot Pedroia back in the No. 2 spot. The Red Sox should be ok with a 2-hitter who delivers a .280 average with 10 home runs and Gold Glove defense, whereas they need a bigger bat in the No. 3 spot.
