Brad Stevens has not been afraid to hire youth on his staff in his short tenure in Boston, and now it appears adding ex-Celtics to the fray may be a priority as well.
The 36-year-old ex-Butler coach is reportedly targeting James Posey to join the Celtics coaching staff starting this upcoming season. The news comes from Jeff Goodman of ESPN.com, who reports that Stevens is "likely to hire the ex-player."
Posey was of course a member of the 2008 championship Celtics squad, serving as a crucial role player useful mostly for his defensive prowess. The 36-year-old has little coaching experience and is only the same age as Brad Stevens, but could be a key component on the staff as a savvy NBA veteran who can offer sage advice.
And he may not be the only one.
CSNNE's Greg Dickerson reports that former Celtic Walter McCarty is also deeply in the mix for a spot among the Boston coaches.
Former Celtic Walter McCarty has met w brad Stevens twice about joining his staff in some capacity.— greg dickerson (@gdickerson_csn) August 18, 2013
McCarty's presence in Boston, of course, wasn't as recent as Posey's nor did it involve a championship. Yet, he was an important (and beloved) name in the city for seven seasons, one of which included a trip to the Eastern Conference Finals. McCarty is 39 years old, and it is unclear to this point whether Stevens is willing to put both ex-Celtics on the staff or is choosing between the two.
Considering Stevens' actions as coach thus far, it would hardly be surprising if he indeed added both past Celtic fixtures to his staff. Earlier this week, the young coach displayed a thoughtfulness for the elders of the organization, sending a letter to two former Celtics players in which he told the pair that "if they ever want to attend practice or home/away games, call [my] office" and that "they’re always welcome to continue to be part of the Celtics’ tradition."
If the reports on Posey and McCarty are any indication, this was not a hollow gesture. Stevens could be forming an interesting mix of untested youth and experienced veteran leadership to his operation.
We'll see how these rumors play out in the coming days. Stay tuned...
