Joel Hanrahan's trip to the disabled list, made official on Tuesday afternoon, had a ripple effect on the Red Sox bullpen.
The Red Sox called up right-handed Allen Webster from Pawtucket to take Hanrahan's roster spot and immediately placed him in the starting rotation. Felix Doubront, whose place in the rotation is being taken by Webster, has been shifted to the bullpen, starting tonight. Webster -- who performed well in an emergency start against Kansas City last month and who was 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in four starts for the PawSox -- will make Doubront's scheduled start on Wednesday night.
Manager John Farrell stressed that both were short-term moves.
The news on Hanrahan is relatively encouraging, with the Sox saying he was suffering from inflammation in his forearm and had no structural damage to the elbow. Earlier in the day, the Sox announced Junichi Tazawa would serve as temporary closer with Hanrahan and Andrew Bailey sidelined.
More to come . . .
