Cardinals manager Mike Matheny surprised some by leaving reliever Carlos Martinez in the game in the 7th inning to face David Ortiz.

Ortiz ended up singling in the infield, but the damage was nowhere near where it could have been, and Martinez was able to stay in the game and face Mike Napoli, where he got him to pop out.

Matheny was asked about the decision to leave Martinez in to face Ortiz.

"It's not an easy decision. Knowing that we have a left-hander up and ready to go," Matheny said. "A lot of it has to do with what we see. How the ball is coming out of Carlos' hand at that point. Once again we had two guys on base, one by an error, one on a ball that made its way through the infield. But it looked like he had real good life. We realized that if we could get through Ortiz, then we had an opportunity to use Carlos's good life right there against Napoli, and we wouldn't have had to bring Trevor [Rosenthal] in for more than one. Not an easy call but we liked the way Carlos was throwing the ball at that particular time."
