After winning just 69 games last season, the Red Sox won their 100th last night and punched their ticket to the American League Championship Series.
How'd they do it? It was the pitching, stupid.
Last night was yet another example of just how important this pitching staff has been to the team's success. Tony Massarotti, Lou Merloni and Gary Tanguay highlighted the staff's pitching performance in Game 4 against the Rays.
"Phenomenal achievement," Massarotti said. "Really what can you say? To bounce back from that defeat, emblematic of everything they've done all season long. In regard to tonight in particular, exceptionally well-pitched game as a team. One hundred twenty-two pitches, 10 strikeouts, no walks, the bullpen had 7 strikeouts, terrific. Exceptionally well-pitched game and I thought well-manged too."
