ST. LOUIS - Kelly Johnson joined the Red Sox for Thursday's series finale here, with Mookie Betts being optioned back to Pawtucket to make room.

"He'll pinch hit, and is able to play first, third and left field," said Farrell. "There's versatility there. Kelly's aware of the role he's coming into, so we'll pick those spots accordingly."

"I've been told to stick to what I've been doing," said Johnson, who was obtained in exchange for Stephen Drew last week. "I'll be kind of a fill-in at a lot of different places. We'll see. I'll keep preparing at all of them and see how it goes."

Johnson has played a game in right in the big leagues, but feels more comfortable in left when it comes to the outfield.

"I feel good about going out there (to left) when I need to," said Johnson.

In the infield, he feels best at the corner spots (first and third), though he's capable of filling in at either second or short in the short-term.

As for Betts, the Sox wanted to make sure he had more regular playing time, which they couldn't offer in Boston.

"In the two stints he's had with us," said Farrell, "you see the improvements defensively but we didn't want to stall that development any further."
