The Boston Red Sox have shifted their focus from celebrating their World Series championship to trying to rebuild their roster to get back there next season.
Ben Cherington will have to make some decisions on free agents Stephen Drew, Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Jacoby Ellsbury.
Michael Felger and Steve Buckley on Sports Sunday gave their opinions on whether the Sox should try to retain these players.
“I want [Xander] Bogaerts to be the shortstop,” Buckley said. “I really think he is the real deal. I don’t think you are going to get the range and the defense that Drew provides. Having said that, I wouldn’t throw myself off a bridge if they kept Drew because he really is that good. And we saw in a short series how important defense is.”
With Drew’s future with the Red Sox in doubt, Saltalamacchia’s future with the ball club is in doubt as well after the team did not extend a qualifying offer to him this past week.
“I just don’t trust the pitching staff with him and it’s not because of what happened in the World Series,” Buckley said. “I just never been sold on him being the guy you want behind the plate.”
