LANDOVER, Maryland -- The third quarter belonged to the third string quarterbacks. Colt McCoy for the Redskins and Jimmy Garoppolo for the Patriots had a nice little duel going.

McCoy finished the quarter 8-for-9 for 102 yards with a touchdown against a Patriots defense that was comprised of non-starters.

Garoppolo, meanwhile went 3-for-6 for 29 yards but had a surprising level of command and efficiency while in there.

On Garoppolo’s first drive, he threw a bit behind Justin Jones who looked very stiff and couldn’t make the difficult catch. He followed with a quick completion to Josh Boyce for 7 yards, got a third-down conversion on a run by Roy Finch, had an 8-yard completion to Boyce then went up top to Brian Tyms, who’s been making a case to stick around.

Tyms made an acrobatic catch on the 38-yard throw, pinning it against his helmet for what appeared to be a remarkable touchdown catch. But the ball was ruled incomplete and the Redskins were flagged for pass interference. The ball was spotted at the 4 and they couldn’t get it in on four tries. The final attempt went begging but Garoppolo did a nice job eluding pressure and buying time before throwing incomplete.

A few more takeaways:

* Derrick Johnson and Josh Boyce were back deep to receive the second-half kickoff.

* Jordan Devey, Chris Barker, Ryan Wendell, Jon Halapio and Cameron Fleming were the offensive line for much of the third quarter.

* Logan Ryan got fended off down the sideline on a longish completion. He hasn’t had a great night.

* Justin Jones is not a fluid mover.

* Steve Beauharnais, a second-year linebacker, has not played well in the running game.

* Tyms, a 6-3, 204-pounder from Florida A&M has made several nice plays in camp and again in this game. It’s going to be hard to make the team out of camp at receiver, but he is tracking to make a case for the practice squad at least.

* Linebacker James Anderson showed nice pursuit to the flat on a screen. He’s here as a coverage linebacker and depth and his speed was evident there.
