C.J. Spiller has returned to the Bills to help them prepare for the season opener this Sunday in Buffalo.
Spiller spent the past week in Florida, trying to help his family deal with the aftermath of a shooting spree in which Spiller’s grandfather shot four people – killing two – before committing suicide.
Spiller acknowledged he’s far from OK.
“I wanted to be around my guys,” Spiller said. “I wanted to come and practice with these guys and get ready for New England. I understand that it is a tragic event that took place. It’s going to take a while to cope with it. But at the same time, I can’t forget the task and the goal and the dreams that we have here as a team and as an organization. I want to be a part of that.”
Bill safety Jairus Byrd, meanwhile, is dealing with plantar fasciitis that could keep him out of the season opener.
He continues to be a limited participant in Bills practices and head coach Doug Marrone said Sunday, “He’s still working his way back in, doing a couple of team things, but he’s still working his way back in to get in a position where he can help us.”
