Patriots stand pat as Reed signs with Jets

Given the mutual admiration that's passed between Ed Reed and Bill Belichick over the years, it's was wholly appropriate to wonder if the Patriots would make a run at Reed when he was released by the Texans.

Now that he's been signed by the Jets, it's appropriate to wonder whether A) the Patriots had no interest in Reed or B) Reed chose New York over New England.

The reality is closest to "No disrespect, but we're all set right now..."

The Patriots interest in the offseason could be characterized as "We'll leave the light on for ya..." before Reed signed with the Texans. Given Reed made minimal impact in Houston, the Patriots didn't figure to be much more urgent in signing Reed now, despite his Hall of Fame resume.

With a bad hip that cost him training camp and the first two weeks of the season, Reed never got in a groove in Houston and he was barely being used. Bringing Reed in to determine what he could do at this stage of the season wasn't appealing.

The Jets - who've had issues at safety - showed an immediate interest.

And that's why Reed is reunited with Rex Ryan.
