Monday morning, Bill Belichick indicated there could be some coaching staff changes afoot.
He wasn’t kidding.
So far, linebackers coach Pepper Johnson has resigned, offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia has retired and tight ends coach George Godsey has gone to coach the Houston Texans’ quarterbacks for Bill O’Brien. Godsey played quarterback at Georgia Tech when O’Brien was an assistant there.
Scarnecchia’s retirement was obviously anticipated given the speed with which the team replaced him with Dave Deguglielmo. Replacing Johnson doesn’t seem to be a priority, as Belichick indicated on WEEI, "I think we can handle the situation as it is. But that doesn't mean we wouldn't necessarily not add somebody. I'm not sure how that will go."
Godsey did a pretty good job considering. A tight-end based offense in 2011 and 2012 was stripped of its stars in 2013 and Godsey helped shepherd Matthew Mulligan into a contributor’s role.
Given the Patriots apparent need for a “move” tight end who can complement Rob Gronkowski, whoever replaces Godsey will have an important role.
