BOSTON – It may not have been his signature towering blast. But a two-run single may have been just what David Ortiz needed to knock him out of his slump. It was just enough to give the Red Sox a 4-3 win over the White Sox at Fenway Park Friday night, providing what would prove to be the winning run.

The single, through the shift to right field with two outs in the fourth inning, scored Shane Victorino and Dustin Pedroia. It also snapped an 0-for-23 slide for Ortiz, who entered the game hitless in his last six games with eight strikeouts.

“Regardless of where it went or how hard it was hit, I think just the fact that he was able to get a big key hit in that moment and I thought he had good at bats throughout the night,” said manager John Farrell.

Ortiz, for one, was not concerned about his recently offensive futility.

“Don’t worry about me,” he said. “You can worry about me when I go to the plate with no bat.”

Ortiz went 1-for-2 with two walks in addition to the two RBI. One of the walks came in the sixth inning, after an intentional walk to Dustin Pedroia. Before his single Friday night, his last hit was a ninth-inning single off the Yankees’ Mariano Rivera on Aug. 18 at Fenway.

Asked if he appreciated that Farrell stuck with him through his recent slump, Ortiz replied:

“What else can you do? Just because I struggle for a week you think he should sit me down? No. Or not play me or something like that?

“Sure, sure I got faith. I been doing this a long time. We got plenty of players here that play every day that have been struggling longer than me. What does he do? He plays them every day. That’s the way it should be. We know how to bounce back.”

Asked what he had been struggling with, Ortiz replied:

“Not being able to hit the ball where nobody’s at.

“Some at-bats it was a little bit of timing, some at-bats it was just missing pitches. But even going 0-for-20-whatever I wasn’t worried about it because it wasn’t like I was looking bad with pitches or anything like that. It was some good swings, hitting balls right at some people. It was some pitches that you miss you put a good swing on it. Not too much you can do about it. Just be patient.

“I feel fine. I feel like I feel every day…I don’t worry about it. I just got you guys used to seeing me rake all the time.”
