The team saves $13.25 million from Ryan Dempster's decision to walk away from baseball for the 2014 season

On Sunday Ryan Dempster walked away from the Red Sox and the $13.25 remaining on his contract for the 2014 season.

The announcement removes a veteran arm from the starting rotation puzzle, but gives the team more money with which to play should it feel the need to sign a free agent -- Stephen Drew, for example -- or add a larger contract at the trading deadline.
