Vermont earns NCAA berth; BU out; URI on bubble

Vermont earned an NCAA tournament berth -- and may wind up being the only New England team in the field -- with an 83-70 victory over Boston University in the America East championship game Saturday.

The only remaining N.E. team with legitimate tourney hopes, the University of Rhode Island, may have seen its bubble burst with a 57-44 loss to Temple in the Atlantic 10 semifinals. The Rams are now 23-9, and are one of the teams that will anxiously sit through the Selection Sunday announcement tomorrow. URI's signature wins this season came over Oklahoma State, Boston College and Providence College, and the December victories over BC and PC lost their luster when both the Eagles and Friars suffered through lackluster seasons.
