Sports Tonight: Caroline's nightly visit isn't sweet

A little thing like an historic collapse can't stop the nightly 'Sweet Caroline' sing-a-long at Fenway Park -- three times during this homestand, the singing happily went on immediately after the Red Sox had blown a lead in the top of the eighth inning -- and it drives both Sports Tonight's Michael Felger and the Boston Globe's Bob Ryan crazy.

However, Ryan disagrees with Felger's assertion that "it's filtered into the team itself . . . the Red Sox are a very soft team . . . and I think somewhere down the line, they're just related a little bit."

"I don't think they're related, though I agree with you about the atmosphere," said Ryan, later adding: "I don't think it carries over to the team's play and what's going on now on the field."

"I do," shot back Felger.

"Well, I know you do," responded Ryan, "and I respectfully disagree."

But as for 'Sweet Caroline'?

"It's an embarrassment," said Ryan. "It's a national embarrassment to us every time that thing goes off."
