Sox fans find 2018 title banner on road in Somerville

Barring an unprecedented collapse, the Red Sox will soon be posting a '2018 A.L. East Champions' banner outside Fenway Park. It won't be there long -- the Sox now only permanently hang league championship or World Series banners on the brick walls on Jersey Street, and use the division banner as a placeholder (which is removed if the Sox don't go on to win the pennant or the Series) -- but it'll go up as soon as they clinch, which could be tonight.

And if they do, they have Louie Iacuzzi, James Amaral and Randy Baldasarri to thank.

The three friends were driving in Somerville when they saw something wrapped in brown paper on the road. They unwrapped it and discovered . . .

The banner apparently had fallen off a delivery truck, presumably on its way to Fenway.

Their plan is to return the banner to the Red Sox, so it'll be ready to raise as soon as they win it.

After initially seeking "financial compensation" for the safe return of the banner, according to the Boston Globe, the pair has returned the banner and come away empty-handed.

From The Globe's story:

The Sox confirmed shortly before 4 p.m. that the banner, which they plan to unveil outside Fenway if they clinch the American League East crown as expected, was in their possession. A team spokeswoman said the people who returned it received nothing in exchange for the item
