Royals' 6-3 victory ends Red Sox' winning streak at four

BOSTON - It turns out that five straight wins is asking for too much out of the Red Sox this season.

The Red Sox dropped Saturday night's game against the Royals 6-3 and failed to set a new season-high win streak in the process.

Though the Sox have hit the heck out of the ball over the past week, the bats were quiet against Royals starter Yordano Ventura.

It wasn't until the sixth inning that the Red Sox got on the board when after consecutive singles, Travis Shaw grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Xander Bogaerts.

But by that point, they were already down 5-0.

In fact, they were down 2-0 before they even stepped to the plate.

With two outs in the first inning, Matt Barnes allowed back-to-back singles that put Kendrys Morales to the plate. Morales then doubled off the wall in left which easily would have scored one, but a misplay by Hanley Ramriez allowed the second run in.

Barnes would settle in from that point on until the sixth inning when he ran into trouble again.

With one out, he walked Morales and allowed a single to Mike Moustakas. In the next at-bat, Salvador Perez unloaded a three-run home run to right field that would give the Royals a 5-0 lead and end Barnes' night.

Barnes allowed the five runs on eight hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings. He threw 96 pitches and struck out two.

Ventura kept the Sox in check throughout the six innings he pitched, limiting them to just one run (the Shaw groundout) on six hits and one walk with six strikeouts.

With Ventura out of the game and the score 5-1 in the seventh, Mookie Betts hit a solo home run into the Green Monster seats, but the Royals would answer with one run of their own an inning later.

The Sox made things interesting in the bottom of the 9th when with two on and two out, Bogaerts singled home Mookie Betts to make it 6-3. David Ortiz then walked to load the bases for Shaw, but he swung at the first pitch and popped up to third base, ending the threat and the game.
