Ricky Williams recalls seeing ‘flustered' Bill Belichick during ‘Wildcat' game

Bill Belichick is rarely outcoached, and he's never underprepared for an NFL game.

Except for that Sunday afternoon in September 2008.

We're talking about the infamous "Wildcat Game," where the Miami Dolphins showed up to their game against the New England Patriots with a completely overhauled offense that involved Ronnie Brown taking shotgun snaps as the "Wildcat" quarterback in the same backfield as Ricky Williams.

The Wildcat caught New England completely off-guard: Brown and Williams combined for 211 rushing yards in a 38-13 rout of the Patriots at their own stadium.

Reliving that game in a recent interview with Bleacher Report's Master Tesfatsion, Williams said the Dolphins observed something very out-of-character for a Bill Belichick-coached Patriots team.

"What we started to notice with the Patriots is, they were disheveled," Williams said. "They were arguing on the field. They were confused. And we took them out of their element."

But what was most surprising to Williams was seeing Belichick all hot and bothered.

"He usually looks so calm, cool and collected, and you could tell he was flustered, you know?" Williams said.

"He had extra meetings with the defensive guys trying to figure out what we were doing. And that feeling looking across the sidelines and just seeing the defense bickering with each other and seeing Belichick all out of sorts."

No wonder Belichick literally buried the Patriots' film from this game.

Williams noted that win helped spark the Dolphins, who entered the game 0-2 but finished 11-5 to keep the Patriots out of the playoffs for the first time since 2002.

"It wasn't just beating the Patriots; it was dominating them," he added.

Belichick didn't lose his composure for long, though: New England beat the San Francisco 49ers the week after that embarrassing loss to the Dolphins and got its revenge on Miami with a 48-28 win in Week 12.
