Philip Rivers announced his retirement from the NFL on Wednesday, ending an extraordinary career that began in 2004.
Rivers spent the first 16 seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Chargers franchise before signing with the Indianapolis Colts for the 2020 campaign.
He's one of the best quarterbacks never to win a Super Bowl. He came close to reaching the Super Bowl a couple times, including in 2007.

Rivers suffered a torn ACL in the Chargers' AFC Divisional Round playoff win over the Indianapolis Colts. Despite the major injury, he actually played the next week against the then-undefeated New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game at Gillette Stadium.
The 39-year-old quarterback's retirement announcement actually comes on the anniversary of that AFC title game versus the Patriots. The matchup was a little closer than Patriots fans might remember as Rivers and the Chargers gave a valiant effort before ultimately losing 21-12.
Rivers mentioned this playoff game against the Pats in a statement sent to ESPN regarding his retirement.
Rivers went 1-5 versus the Patriots in his regular season career, in addition to an 0-2 mark in the playoffs.
