Marc Savard calls Bruins' reported Charlie Coyle trade a “great pickup”

The Boston Bruins traded for Minnesota Wild center Charlie Coyle on Wednesday, and one of the team's former players approves of the move.

Marc Savard, who played in Boston from 2006-07 through 2010-11, tweeted his thoughts on the trade shortly after reports started to surface.

Coyle has tallied 28 points (10 goals, 18 assists) in 60 games this season. He's from East Weymouth, Mass., and played at Boston University. Coyle has not lived up to the expectations placed on him when he was selected in the first round of the 2010 NHL Draft, but a fresh start (he's spent all seven of his pro seasons in Minnesota) could jumpstart his career.

The price to acquire Coyle was not cheap, though. The Bruins sent talented 22-year-old forward Ryan Donato and a conditional draft pick to Minnesota. Coyle, however, is better equipped to help the Bruins win right now -- he's a stronger two-way player than Donato at this stage of their respective careers.

Time will tell if this move was a good one for the Bruins, but if this is the only deal they make before the trade deadline, it's hard to imagine them beating the Tampa Bay Lightning if these rivals meet in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
