Jed Lowrie acquired by A's

The Red Sox stole the A's shortstop when they signed Stephen Drew to a one-year contract. So, on Monday, Oakland returned the favor . . . kind of.

Ex-Red Sox infielder Jed Lowrie -- dealt by the Sox to the Astros last winter in the Mark Melancon deal -- is now in Oakland, having been acquired by the A's in a five-player deal. The A's picked up Lowrie and right-handed pitcher Fernando Rodriguez for first baseman Chris Carter (another ex-Sox farmhand), right-hander Brad Peacock and catcher Max Stassi.

Lowrie could replace Drew at shortstop for the A's, or he could play second base with Japanese import Hiroyuki Nakajima at short. Perpetually injured -- including last year, when he missed the second half of the season -- he still hit 16 homers in 97 games in 2012 and could be a valuable addition if he could stay healthy. Of course, the Red Sox said that every year from 2008 until they traded him, and the Astros said it last year.

There's a first time for everything, though, and if it happens this year . . .
