Atchison an All-Star?

BOSTON -- Is Scott Atchison an All-Star?

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine thinks he should at least be in the discussion.

"I think he'll get mentioned," said Valentine before Friday's game against the Atlanta Braves at Fenway Park. "I think he should get attention and mentioned. I'm not sure what Ron Washington's thinking.

"If you hit against him, you'd vote for him. I'd bet that."

Valentine went on to praise Atchison for being a guy that's established himself as a multiple-inning reliever who can get outs from both sides of the plate.

Atchison leads all Red Sox relievers in innings pitched (38.1) and ERA (1.17). And he impressed Valentine immediately in spring training.

"What he did early, was, he pitched multiple innings," said Valentine. "And that was a real value. He's elevated his status from just being the guy that can be the long man. He's earned it every step of the way.

"He earned his spot on the roster, and then he earned a place that he can stay on the roster, and now he's earned a middle-to-late inning spot on the roster."
