"Damn it that was fun. For parts of 10 years I got to do the only thing I ever wanted to do…play Major League Baseball," Holt wrote. "Today I hang them up knowing I did the best I could for me, my family, and my teammates. I’m proud of every single second of it. If you were a part of it at any point…know that I love you and I am forever grateful! We had one hell of a ride."

His former Sox teammate Christian Vazquez shared a congratulatory message on Twitter.

Holt, 34, played in Boston for seven seasons (2013-19). He was an All-Star in 2015 and helped the Red Sox to a World Series title in 2018. He also played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers, Washington Nationals and Texas Rangers during his career.

Holt's versatility made him a valuable asset throughout his tenure in the league. He played every position at the big-league level except catcher.

In 751 career games, Holt slashed .262/.332/.362 with 25 homers and 234 RBI. He had several key postseason moments, including becoming the only player in MLB history to hit for the cycle in the playoffs.
