Adam Schefter addresses cryptic “bigger name than Robert Kraft” report

The NFL's preeminent news breaker has some explaining to do.

ESPN's Adam Schefter added gasoline to the Robert Kraft bonfire in late February, reporting shortly after the New England Patriots owner was first charged with soliciting prostitution that a more prominent name than Kraft may be tied to the case.

"I'm told that Robert Kraft is not the biggest name involved down there in South Florida," Schefter said during a Feb. 22 live hit on SportsCenter.

We still haven't heard of a bigger name involved in the prostitution scandal, though, and a Florida official insisted people working on the case had "no idea" what Schefter was talking about.

During an appearance Wednesday on Barstool Sports' "Pardon My Take," Schefter discussed his report for the first time.

"I don’t have the name, because I was not given the name," Schefter said. "And, again, maybe I should have framed it a little differently because the story took on a life of its own.

"And I should have said, ‘There are people down there telling me…’ Now, there are people who tell you things. They sometimes come to be and sometimes don’t."

Translation: Don't hold your breath for the name of a bigger public figure to come out.

Schefter insisted he wasn't completely led astray, though.

"Wasn’t John Havens, who was second in command at Citigroup, a big name?” Schefter said. “Like, I had people from CNBC -- I could show you the texts -- texting me. Literally, I could read to you right now: 'John Havens was caught in the sting. He ran Sales and Trading for Morgan Stanley, was the No. 2 at Citigroup. How can people destroy their lives?' "

For now, it appears the primary focus in this case will be on Kraft, who was ordered to appear in Palm Beach County court March 28 to face two misdemeanor charges of soliciting prostitution but isn't obligated to show up, according to his lawyer.
