Ric Bucher says the Celtics may be too beholden to their veteran stars, as was the case with Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish

This is what could've been ladies isn't. The Celtics could -- Dwight Howard to the top I just meant well but Eric Bledsoe in the Andre Jordan from the Clippers. And Rondo would have been a Lakers Jeff Green of Brandon backs would've been a -- at Kevin Garnett if you just waive that no trade clause. -- -- -- -- but it wasn't a big. Welcome back little sports tonight would sit down to spring training in Arizona you may wonder why were you could there. Because he's a big deal he's got a radio show too so not only is he our NBA insider but he's also do some baseball. So what's the deal -- themselves because they couldn't pull this mega deal off today has the window closed. Will they be unable to trade Paul Pierce or Kevin Garnett or Roger -- Rondo in the future. But certainly -- on Rondo is still going to have value if you're talking about the Celtics making the kind of deal that's going to transform them. Instantly into a title contender once again. Those days were probably about two years ago so it's a matter of and I think GM Danny Ainge recognized this and at at the moment. It's a matter of maybe tweaking it and seeing just how far this current group. And go but as constituted. This is probably not good the good news for the Celtics. But this is beginning to be very reminiscent. Of when Larry Bird Kevin McHale and Robert Harris. It's rode off into the sunset and then there was a very fallow period for a long period of time. Because they were so beholden to those superstars that they were willing to move them before they were completely done. You know that is the position that the Celtics find themselves in right now. Now it is no doubt about it races I do feel bad for Danny because he did say you would never do what -- did and you know I I. And hang under the stars to long. And -- those reds are coming back to haunt them but listen you're there 2010 NBA finals it's the Lakers and the Celtics the Celtics -- At the beginning of the fourth quarter. Now that year it was gravy no one in the Boston front office thought the Celtics were gonna go to the finals and that they were gonna take on the Lakers let alone win. Belt prior to the get into the final -- gonna blow it up. And because they get back to the finals they decided to hang onto these guys and I think that decision. That decision right there three years ago is the reason they're in the position they're in now. Yeah and and to to be fair. You also need to have that opportunity. To make a move it to say okay were willing to do this because we can see the building blocks moving forward and may be the deal that they'd like -- I'm always hesitant exit to criticize if I don't know that there was a specific deal out there. That they could have made. That would've changed their fortunes and I don't know of a deal as of right now. That they passed on. That they had an opportunity to make definitively. As it would change their course I just would have preferred for them. Rather than reacting KG for another three years. Looking at the opportunity to say you know what OK maybe we're not going to be good for a for a year to. But were not going to tie ourselves to this veteran group because we know that their time has already passed well how's. -- where you that they gave KG the no trade clause because that's the problem that's been the fly in the ointment yeah. Yeah no I mean obviously that's a big part of it you also look though at the fact that it. When they moved Kendrick Perkins never in their wildest. To -- that they expect that that was gonna have the emotional impact that it had on the rest of the team communicate that team sideways for a good long period and so. Danny probably had to look at and say you know what -- -- KT we're gonna be up. We're going to be an emotional wreck anyway and it might as well given the no trade because they can't afford to do that. I can only think that -- that went into that thinking but regardless. When you pay yet KG. At his -- as much as you're paying him. For an additional two years. That's almost equivalent to a no trade because there are very few teams. Looking at that super luxury tax that are going to be willing to go out and can't get a Kevin Garnett. The Clippers. Were the closest thing to it and it's only because they've got Chris Paul there anyway to make sure that they're able to re -- him. Okay the room was -- Chris Humphries and Marcel Brooks from the nets to the salvaged from Paul Pierce is this an example that Paul's value has dropped in the marketplace. Yeah I'm really not convinced. How solid. That offer was -- there is a question out there Paul Pierce is still able to dial it up and be all that Paul Pierce -- At times but no longer consistently. And that is the general feeling around the league there's still a lot of respect. As far as what he can get to. Times but as the guy that you can build around. Or a guy that can lead you to a title there are very big questions among the other teams in the league whether he still is that kind of a guy. Okay Rick I've got thirty seconds years does rise on Rondo finish out his contract and a Celtic uniform. I am I'm gonna say no just because I believe that where there's smoke there's fire there's just been too many times. Where in spite of all that -- John has done in a Celtics uniform his name has been out there and you hear other teams consistently saying. Yes he's available. I don't know why that would change now. If it's if it's been going on all this time so I'm gonna say. And and largely because if you look at history. Nobody seems to continue on in one uniform I'm gonna say no that Rondo is not going to finish out. This contract as the Boston Celtics.
