FOXBORO, Ma - It's official.

Veteran Matt Reis has won the New England Revolution goalkeeper "competition" and has been told he will get the start in the team's season-opener on Saturday in Chicago, according to Revolution coach Jay Heaps.

The 37-year-old Reis beat out 25-year-old Bobby Shuttleworth for the starting gig.

"I think they've had a really good competition," said Heaps on Tuesday, a day before making the decision. "I think that we saw that at the end of last year, Bobby and Matt really pushing each other. And they've had a spirited battle."

With Saturday's start, Reis will claim sole possession of fourth place on MLS' career starts list for goalkeepers (277). He'll also tie for fourth place on the MLS' career appearances list for goalkeepers (282), and tie Heaps for second place on the Revolution's career appearances list (243).
