Alex Smith's return might be the best story in football this year. The 36-year-old made his first NFL start Sunday since suffering what many believed would be a career-ending leg injury two years ago.

He and the Washington Football Team came oh so close to topping the Lions, but a 59-yard Matt Prater field goal gave Detroit a 30-27 win in the game's final moments.
