RALEIGH, N.C.The Bruins have made the third period their calling card this season, and it was only appropriate they did it again against the Hurricanes Tuesday night in their first game coming out of the All-Star break. Nathan Horton and Patrice Bergeron each scored in a span of 1 minute and 19 seconds in the third period, leading the Bruins to a tight 3-2 win over a Carolina team that looks like its going to be handful in the second half of the season. The Bergeron goal looked like it bounced off a body in front of the net, and Boston enjoyed the good fortune of a little luck."No matter what you do, the first game back from the All-Star break is going to be a little sloppy," said goalie Tim Thomas, who was marvelous in the third period of a one-goal game. "But I thought we did a good job of battling and then hanging in there once we got the lead in the third period."The victory was the Bruins' third straight over the 'Canes in a span of two weeks.Joe Corvo capitalized on a bouncing puck to get Carolina within one goal in the third, but Thomas the Bruins defense held for the rest of the period.Thomas made eight saves in the third and 26 in the game overall to improve his record to 3-1 against Carolina this season, and the Bruins improved to a plus-31 in the third period this season. The plus-31 is the best team-wide plusminus number in any period for any team in the NHL this season, and is the kind of number that screams Stanley Cup.After a scoreless first, the Bruins and Hurricanes traded goals in the second period. Daniel Paille notched his first of the season on a tipped puck, and Jamie McBain was the beneficiary of two fortunate bounces in front of the Boston net.
