Bruins off to disastrous start, lose 4-2 to Habs

BOSTON -- The Bruins are now 2/3 of the way to having a disastrously bad start to their regular season.

It was an improvement on their one-sided loss on opening night, but the Bruins still didn’t do nearly enough in their 4-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens at TD Garden.

The defeat dropped the Bruins to 1-9-2 in their last 12 games against the Canadiens, in what’s become a very one-sided rivalry.

The Habs controlled the flow of play, while outshooting the Bruins by a 38-20 margin.

They seized the upper hand early on a first period power play goal.

It took exactly 11 seconds on the man advantage for David Desharnais to score on a second effort shot right in front of the net.

Then Lars Eller added two more goals in the second period on some Boston breakdowns. The first was a David Pastrnak neutral zone turnover compounded by Pastrnak doing a fly-by on Eller in the Bruins defensive, while the winger was finishing off the give-and-go with Alex Semin.

Later in the second period, Alex Galchenyuk fed Eller for a one-timer that squeaked through Tuukka Rask’s pads to give Montreal a commanding 3-0 lead.

The Bruins appeared to have their own goal in the second period when Loui Eriksson redirected a puck past Carey Price, with Patrice Bergeron screening in front. But it was waved off because of incidental contact between Bergeron and Price, and then upheld when Claude Julien attempted his first coach’s challenge of the season.

It appeared that Bergeron was pushed into Price by Alexei Emelin as the puck arrived, and it should have been a goal for the Black and Gold.

The B’s did eventually find the back of the net when Matt Beleskey scored on a deflection off a diving Jeff Petry in front, and added a Patrice Bergeron power play goal in the closing seconds of garbage time.

Tomas Plekanec iced the game with an empty net goal in the final minute of the third period.
