Source: Kline agrees to two-year extension with the Patriots

The Patriots and offensive lineman Josh Kline have agreed to a two-year extension that will keep Kline in New England through the 2017 season, according to a source.

Per ESPN's Field Yates, who was the first to report the extension, it's a pact worth $3.3 million in base salary and a maximum of $4.9 million.

One could make the argument that Kline, who was scheduled to become a restricted free agent after this season, has been New England's most consistent offensive lineman this season. He's one of just two players who have played in all eight games thus far and seen over 500 snaps -- the only other is undrafted rookie David Andrews, who has played in every offensive snap this season -- and according to Pro Football Focus, he has not yet allowed a sack this season.

Kline joined the team in 2013 as an undrafted free agent out of Kent State but quickly found himself in a significant role. He played as the team's starting left guard in a win over the Ravens in December of that year, helping the Patriots clinch the AFC East title.

An Ohio state champion wrestler in high school, Kline ended up playing every position along the offensive line in college. He's continues to showcase his versatility in New England as he's played both right and left guard this season with several moving pieces along the offensive line. He also worked out at center during training camp to give the team some depth at that spot while second-year center Bryan Stork was dealing with an injury.

Kline played in 11 games last season, making five starts. He served as the team's starting right guard against the Colts in last year's AFC Championship Game.

"Josh has given us consistent play," Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said on Tuesday. "He's played at both guard spots this year so he's had to be in tandem with a lot of different people -- certainly the center, David Andrews, but also both tackles, all the tackle combinations that he's played alongside. He's an intelligent guy. He's tough. He plays very hard, and he always gives us everything he has.

"He's a guy that's been in our system. He's learned how to play in our offense, and he's a valuable piece to what we do. We count on him to provide veteran leadership and help with the communication process up front along with the other guys. He's done a very good job of being accountable to his job, accountable to his preparation every week. He comes out and plays a full 60 minutes every single week."
