Celtics Talk: What grade does Stevens deserve for first offseason?

Share

Brad Stevens has given Boston Celtics fans and analysts plenty to chew on this summer.

In a span of less than three months since replacing Danny Ainge as Celtics president of basketball operations on June 2, Stevens has hired a new head coach (Ime Udoka), traded his starting point guard (Kemba Walker), added six new players via trade or free agency (Al Horford, Josh Richardson, Kris Dunn, Bruno Fernando, Enes Kanter, Dennis Schroder), completed a sign-and-trade to send Evan Fournier to the New York Knicks and signed two players to contract extensions (Marcus Smart and Robert Williams).

But did all of Stevens' moves actually improve a Celtics team that flamed out in the first round of the 2021 NBA Playoffs as the No. 7 seed?

Stadium's Jeff Goodman joined Chris Forsberg to hand out grades for Stevens' first offseason as an executive and wasn't too kind to the C's coach-turned-executive.

"I don't think you can give him better than a C," Goodman told Forsberg. "How can you? The team is worse.

"We'll give him an A if he lands Bradley Beal. ... But until that happens, how can you give him anything better than a C?

"The bottom line is, this team that barely got into the playoffs a year ago -- how can you make a case that it's better than it was a year ago?"

Goodman clearly isn't enamored with the new supporting cast for Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, and feels that Walker and Fournier were better than Stevens' new group of role players.

Forsberg: Thoughts on C's extensions and what's left to do with roster

But Forsberg noted that this Celtics roster looks like a "better fit" personnel-wise, and argued that Boston could boast a top-five defense after adding quality defenders like Schroder and Dunn.

Forsberg also gave Stevens points for maintaining the Celtics' financial flexibility entering the 2022 offseason, when they could pursue a star player like Beal.

"What Brad did that deserves credit is he set up multiple tracks here where they can figure out what's ahead," Forsberg said.

Forsberg and Goodman also discussed the merits of Williams' extension on the Celtics Talk Podcast, which you can check out on your favorite podcast app or on YouTube below.
