Perry: Stats suggest Patriots secondary is elite

Believe it or not, but the New England Patriots secondary is elite, according to various advanced metrics.

“The Patriots are elite in the secondary when you look at the safeties in terms of coverage,” explained Phil Perry. “According to Pro Football Focus, they have the fourth, fifth, and sixth-best safeties in Duron Harmon, Devin McCourty, and Patrick Chung.”

Perry adds that Malcolm Butler has a grade that’s “twice as good” as Darrelle Revis.

How could that be after so much time was spent before the season nitpicking at their weaknesses?

Tom E. Curran thinks it’s because the Patriots simply put players in positions to succeed.

“For instance, on vertical routes Patrick Chung isn’t that great,” Curran said. “But on crossing routes, he’s outstanding, so they’ve put him in that situation.”
