Brady questionable, Edelman doubtful for Sunday vs. Titans

FOXBORO -- The Patriots have listed Tom Brady as questionable after he missed Friday's practice due to an illness, though indications are that he should be ready to play on Sunday.

Brady's fellow captain Matthew Slater made it sound as though he's planning on having his quarterback on the field and in uniform when the Patriots and Titans kick off.

"I’m sure he’ll do whatever he needs to do and take care of himself," Slater said Friday. "We’re counting on him being there Sunday."

Friday's practice was the first regular-season practice Brady has missed since Sep. 4 of last year when he suffered a calf injury. He returned to practice later that week and played Week 1 against the Dolphins.

It's not often that Brady is kept off of the field because of a physical ailment. Even when he found himself in the middle of a legal battle between the NFLPA and the NFL this summer, he missed just one training camp practice.

Should Brady's illness be serious enough to keep him out of action on Sunday, the quarterback duties would fall to backup Jimmy Garoppolo. The second-year signal caller has played in nine snaps this season and has not attempted a pass since Week 17 of last season when the Patriots and Bills played a game that had no bearing on playoff seeding because New England had already wrapped up the No. 1 seed.

"It’s always strange when [Brady is] not out there but it’s come up a time or two over the last several years," Slater said. "It’s a good day for Jimmy to get some work and us to continue to get better. But obviously, we’re optimistic that '12' will be out there Sunday."

Tight end Rob Gronkowski's absence from Friday's practice was not injury related and he was listed as probable. Patriots center Bryan Stork was also absent from Friday's practice, but like Gronkowski, his absence was not injury related and he was listed as probable for Sunday.

Patriots receiver Julian Edelman appears to be progressing from his foot injury, but he has been listed as doubtful for Sunday. He practiced in a limited capacity three times this week, but it seems as though he could use a little more time to heal before he's ready for game action.

After missing the first two practices of this week, Devin McCourty returned to the field on Friday, and he was limited in practice. He's been listed as questionable for the game. If he can't go, the Patriots will likely rely on Duron Harmon and Patrick Chung as their top two safeties.

Linebackers Jonathan Freeny (hand) and Eric Martin (concussion) have been ruled out for the Titans game.
