Bedard: Pats don't believe Welker is one of their core players

If you want to know where the Patriots are going in their contract negotiations with Wes Welker, listen to Robert Kraft.

In discussing the team's long-term contract agreement with Rob Gronkowski, the Patriots' owner said, "You have to have a core group of players that you can plan around as the foundation of your team."

And that -- says Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe -- doesn't bode well for Welker.

"I just don't think the Patriots think a 31-year-old slot receiver is a core player," Bedard told Michael Felger on 'Sports Sunday'.

And while Bedard says the Pats may eventually "cave" on Welker (though he added he doesn't believe they will), he thinks they're wrong.

"I don't agree with the Patriots' line of thinking on Wes, because I think they say, 'He's a 31-year-old slot receiver; how much can we really commit to this guy? He had ACL surgery'," said Bedard. "I just think Wes Welker has proven in his career, time and time again, that you can't put him in that box. He explodes in that box. He's not the norm. He's the exception."
