Adam Jones gets ejected after arguing with umpire at Fenway Park

Home-plate umpire Sam Holbrook ejected Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones in the fifth inning at Fenway Park on Wednesday.

Jones appeared to be arguing over balls and strikes after he struck out swinging on a 2-2 count. He was the second ejection of the night, as Orioles starter Kevin Gausman had gotten the boot in the second inning after hitting Boston Red Sox short stop Xander Bogaerts.

Just before the ejection, Jones left the batter's box, and was speaking to Holbrook without looking at him. The umpire quickly tossed Jones, who then turned around to further express his displeasure. Orioles manager Buck Showalter walked out to home plate and separated Jones from Holbrook. Showalter then argued in Jones' favor before the Baltimore outfielder took off his helmet and tossed it in the direction of Holbrook. A minute or two after the third strike, Jones left the field for the clubhouse.

It was Jones' first ejection of his career.

This comes after a Fenway Park fan yelled racial slurs at Jones on Monday. A fan also threw a bag of peanuts at Jones. He has since expressed his frustration over the incident.

“A disrespectful fan threw a bag of peanuts at me,’’ Jones said, “I was called the N-word a handful of times tonight. Thanks. Pretty awesome.’’

He added: "It’s unfortunate that people need to resort to those type of epithets to degrade another human being. I’m trying to make a living for myself and for my family."

The stadium responded by giving him a standing ovation on Tuesday.
