Report: NFL execs expect robust market for Jackson if he hits free agency

New England Patriots cornerback J.C. Jackson is one of the top players who could be available when the NFL free agent market opens later this month.

Jackson is just 25 years old and coming off another strong season in Foxboro.

The veteran cornerback tallied 58 total tackles, eight interceptions and a career-high 23 passes defensed over 17 games during the 2021 campaign. He was named to the Pro Bowl, too.

What could Jackson's market look like if he's not franchise tagged by the Patriots and reaches free agency?

Here's what NFL Network reporter Mike Giardi has heard from executives at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis:

ESPN ranked Jackson No. 19 on its list of the top 50 free agents for the 2022 offseason. He was the No. 2 cornerback on the list behind Carlton Davis of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (No. 11 overall).

Curran: Is J.C. Jackson a necessity or a luxury item for Patriots?

The Patriots have chosen not to re-sign some of their best cornerbacks in recent years. They let Malcolm Butler walk in free agency after the 2017 season and traded Stephon Gilmore back in October. New England also hasn't drafted particularly well at cornerback over the last decade. Lackluster draft picks such as Joejuan Williams (Round 2, 2019), Duke Dawson (Round 2, 2018) and Cyrus Jones (Round 2, 2016) are among the most notable examples.

Jackson told our Phil Perry in mid-February that the Patriots have not talked to him about a new contract since the end of the season.

"I guess they feel like they don't need me," Jackson said. "I guess I can't be that important to them. I know I am, but they're not showing me."

Jackson isn't without weaknesses, but considering his age, talent and the Patriots' need for a true No. 1 cornerback, bringing him back on a long-term deal makes a lot of sense for head coach Bill Belichick and his staff.
