The Boston Celtics completed their first trade of the 2021-22 NBA season on Wednesday. Juancho Hernangomez was sent to the San Antonio Spurs in a three-team deal that brings Bol Bol and P.J. Dozier from Denver to Boston.

The move was less about the names in the trade and more about clearing salary. The C's parted ways with Hernangomez’s $6.9 million contract to save about $3 million in the swap and move closer to avoiding the luxury tax.

But wait, there's more.

The Celtics also created a new $6.9 million trade exception with the deal, according to The Boston Globe's Adam Himmelsbach. To complete the trade, they used their remaining $5 million exception that was created in the deal that sent Kemba Walker to the Oklahoma City Thunder. That trade exception would have expired this May.

Boston has one year to use the new $6.9 million exception. The 2022 NBA trade deadline is set for Feb. 10.
