Ben Simmons suspension sparks hot takes, great memes on Twitter

Well, that escalated quickly.

The Philadelphia 76ers suspended guard Ben Simmons one game Tuesday for "conduct detrimental to the team," and the details of his suspension aren't pretty.

Sixers coach Doc Rivers threw Simmons out of Tuesday's practice for being a "distraction" after the three-time All-Star reportedly declined to participate in a team drill and showed "a reluctance to physically and mentally engage," per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Many figured there would be tension between Simmons and the Sixers when the 25-year-old returned to the team recently after an extended holdout in which he demanded to be traded and appeared done with the franchise.

NBA Eastern Conference Preview: How do C's stack up?

It appears things are getting messy in short order for the Boston Celtics' Eastern Conference rival, though. (Simmons practicing in sweatpants with his phone in his pocket Monday probably didn't help his cause.)

Tuesday's news sparked a firestorm of reactions on Twitter, including from former Celtic Paul Pierce, who suggested Philly needs to either work things out with Simmons ASAP or cut bait with the talented guard.

Simmons' suspension also prompted plenty of memes -- and plenty of schadenfreude from Celtics fans and media members witnessing the drama in Philly.

At the moment, Simmons is only suspended for the Sixers' season opener Wednesday against the New Orleans Pelicans. But something tells us this situation is far from over -- and Celtics fans will be watching closely.
