Bill Belichick: James White is ‘one of our best players'

It's clear why James White is a New England Patriots captain. He's been an important presence both on and off the field since joining the team in 2014.

The three-time Super Bowl champion was key in the Patriots' 25-6 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday. White rushed five times for 20 yards and a touchdown while also leading the team with six receptions for 45 yards.

After the win, head coach Bill Belichick raved about his veteran running back.

"He's one of our best players," Belichick said. "He has tremendous consistency. He can really do whatever we ask him to do. Third down, first down, run the ball, catch it, blitz pickup. He gives that group great leadership with his preparation and performance. He's always ready to go on game day. Whatever you need him to do, you can really count on him.

"He came through big today. He was able to make a number of good plays for us, runs and passes, and some key plays. He's a guy we really count on and he delivers."

White already appears to have impressive chemistry with rookie quarterback Mac Jones through the first two games of the campaign. In Week 1 vs. the Miami Dolphins, White caught a team-high six passes for 49 yards.

He and the Patriots will look to carry their momentum into next Sunday's game vs. the New Orleans Saints. Kickoff for that matchup is set for 1 p.m. ET at Gillette Stadium.
