Ex-Pats CB takes shot at Belichick after Cam Newton cut

The New England Patriots' surprisingĀ decision to cut Cam Newton on Tuesday sparked plenty of reactions and hot takes. Perhaps the hottestĀ of the bunch came from former Pats cornerback Asante Samuel.

The two-time Super Bowl champion immediately took to Twitter to share his thoughts on Newton's release and rookie Mac Jones winning the starting quarterback job.

"Belichick never surprises me," he wrote.

OK, fair enough. Belichick has the tendency to zig when others expect him to zag. But Samuel didn't stop there.

Do Belichick's comments mean Pats won't trade Harry?

After ESPN analyst Louis Riddick called Belichick "cold-blooded," Samuel fired off a pretty controversial opinion on the Patriots head coach.

"Cold blooded is a understatement! But without (Tom) Brady he is just another coach in my opinion," Samuel tweeted.

Tell us how you really feel, Asante.

It's a pretty wild take to call Belichick 'just another coach," but at least Samuel is consistent. The four-time Pro Bowler is on record saying Belichick "needed Tom Brady" in order to be successful. That was before Brady went on to win his seventh Super Bowl in his first season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Meanwhile, Belichick and the Newton-led Patriots limped to a 7-9 record and missed the playoffs.

Belichick and the Patriots will look to prove Samuel wrong with Jones leading the offense in 2021. The 15th overall pick in this year's NFL Draft will make his debut as the starter when the Miami Dolphins come to town for the season opener Sept. 12.
