No lateral moves. That was the Blue Jays' stance when rumors of John Farrell returning to Boston as the new Red Sox manager began to surface. The Blue Jays wouldn't allow Farrell to interview with the Red Sox because it was a lateral move -- from manager with the Blue Jays to manager with the Red Sox.
According to Ken Rosenthal FOXSports.com, that didn't keep the Red Sox from trying to talk the Blue Jays into letting them interview Farrell, who served as the Red Sox pitching coach before becoming Toronto's manager.
"However, the Sox never considered it likely that the Jays would engage in serious discussions about Farrell," Rosenthal wrote, "and the conversations failed to progress, sources said."
