The Red Sox have signed outfielder Joey Gathright to a minor league deal, according to the Boston Globe's Peter Abraham.

Gathright is 30 years old and has not played in the majors since 2009, when he appeared in 17 games with the Red Sox. He has a career line of .267.313.267 with a home run and 80 stolen bases in 445 games since 2004.

The news was initially broken on Twitter by Jose Canseco, who plays for and manages the Yuma Scropions, the independent team for which Gathright has been playing.

Canseco's tweet:

Boston Red Sox just bought my yuma scorpions CF Joey gathright .Sending him to aaa but i bet he is in Fenway in October

The news comes shortly after Alex Speier reported that Pawtucket outfielder Ryan Kalish would have season-ending surgery. Major league teams can expand their rosters starting Thursday and Gathright provides potential outfield depth.
