Red Sox purchase Reyes' contract

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Red Sox announced Saturday afternoon that they have purchased the contract of left-handed reliever Dennys Reyes, clearing the way for Reyes to earn a spot on the Opening Day roster.

To make room on the 40-player roster, the Sox placed pitcher Junichi Tazawa, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery, on the 60-day disabled list.

Assuming Tim Wakefield is assured a spot, the Red Sox, with Reyes on board, have six of their seven bullpen slots taken -- Wakefield, Reyes, Dan Wheeler, Bobby Jenks, Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon.

That leaves three pitchers -- Hideki Okajima, Alfredo Aceves and Matt Albers -- in competition for the final position.

Both Okajima and Aceves have minor-league options remaining in their contract, meaning they could be sent to Pawtucket. Albers does not; to be sent to the minors, he would have to clear waivers.
